In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Rawcliffe like this:
RAWCLIFFE, a township in St. Olave-Marygate and St. Michael parishes, N. R. Yorkshire; on the York and Scarborough railway, 2½ miles N W by N of York. Pop.in 1851, 48; in 1861, 115. Houses, 19. The manor belongs to Earl de Grey.
