In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Saltmarshe like this:
SALTMARSH, a township in Howden parish, E. R. Yorkshire; on the river Humber, 4 miles S E by S of Howden. Acres, 1, 190. Real property, £1, 975. Pop., 136. Houses, 28. S. House is the seat of the Salt-marshe family, who date from the Norman times.
