In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Ugthorpe like this:
UGTHORPE, a township in Lythe parish, N. R. Yorkshire; 7½ miles W of Whitby. Acres, 2,180. Real property, £2,178. Pop., 256. Houses, 50. There are a church and a Roman Catholic chapel.
