In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Minehead like this:
Minehead, watering-place, par., and market town, Somerset, on S. shore of Bristol Channel, 8¼ miles NW. of Watchet and 24¾ miles NW. of Taunton by rail, 4581 ac. (590 water), pop. 1774; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Wednesday. The harbour is very safe, but does not receive much support from shipmasters. Minehead is a pleasant place, with excellent houses and good hotels, and is rapidly growing in favour with visitors; it has ample sands, fair bathing, and an interesting neighbourhood. Leather mfr. is the leading industry.
Minehead is now part of SOMERSET Unitary Authority. Click here for graphs and data of how SOMERSET has changed over two centuries. For statistics about Minehead itself, go to Statistics.
