In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Hethersgill like this:
HETHERSGILL, a township in Kirk-Linton parish, Cumberland; on an affluent of the river Line, 6 ½ miles E by N of Longtown. Real property, £5, 114. Pop., 712. Houses, 149.
