In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Gartly like this:
Gartly, par. and ry. sta., Aberdeenshire and detached part of Banffshire, 5 m. S. of Huntly, 18,088 ac., pop. 890; P.O.; contains ruins of old castle of the Barclays.
