In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described St Monance like this:
St Monance (or Abercrombie), par. and fishing vil. with ry. sta. (St Monan's), Fife, on Firth of Forth - par., 1203 ac., pop. 2054; vil., 2 miles NE. of Elie and 3 miles SW. of Anstruther, pop. 1918; P.O., T.O.; is a burgh of barony, and has a good harbour.
