In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Stobo like this:
Stobo, par. and ry. sta., Peeblesshire, on river Tweed - par., 10,302 ac., pop. 467; ry. sta., 6½ miles SW. of Peebles; P.O.; near sta. is Stobo Castle, seat.
