In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Kirkcolm like this:
Kirkcolm, par. and vil., NW. Wigtownshire, on W. side of Loch Ryan--par., 13,318 ac., pop. 1847; vil., 5½ miles NW. of Stranraer, pop. 332; P.O., T.O.; the vil. is also called Stewarton.
