In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Glenisla like this:
Glenisla, par. and hamlet, W. Forfarshire, on river Isla -- par., 41,242 ac., pop. 791; hamlet (Kirkton of Glenisla), 9 miles NW. of Alyth; P.O.; 13 miles NW. of Alyth is Glenisla House, seat.
