In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Alyth like this:
Alyth, par. and town, partly in Forfarshire but chiefly in Perthshire, 23¼ miles NW. of Dundee by rail, 23,296 ac. (of which 3932 are in Forfarshire), pop. 3321; town, pop. 2377; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks; has mfrs. of woollen and linen goods; jute-spinning is also carried on.
