In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Bowden like this:
Bowden.-- par. and vil., NW. Roxburghshire, 1 mile W. of St Boswells ry. sta. and 3 miles S. of Melrose, 7667 ac., pop. 769; P.O. The vil. contains an ancient cross, and ruins or sites of old Border keeps. In the church aisle the Dukes of Roxburghe have their burial-place.
