In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Farnell like this:
Farnell, par. and ry. sta. (Farnell Road), E. Forfarshire, 5703 ac., pop. 613; T.O.; the church stands on S. side of Den of Farnell, near the sta.; a little NW. of church is Farnell Castle (visited by Edward I., 1296), now an almshouse.
