In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Minnigaff like this:
Minnigaff, par. and hamlet, Kirkcudbright - par., 88,130 ac., pop. 1587; the hamlet, on river Cree, is nearly opposite Newton Stewart, part of which (Creebridge) is situated within the par.; Professor Alexander Murray, D.D. (1775-1813), the Oriental scholar, was a native.
