In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Cullen like this:
Cullen.-- parl. and royal burgh, small seaport, and par. with ry. sta., in co. and 8¾ m. NW. of Banff, on C. Bay -- par., 881 ac., pop. 2236; parl. burgh, pop. 2033; royal burgh, 3682; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks; has linen mfrs., and important cod, ling, salmon, and herring fisheries. In vicinity is C. House, seat of the Earl of Seafield. C. unites with Elgin, Banff, Inverurie, Kintore, and Peterhead in returning 1 member to Parliament.
