In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Traquair like this:
Traquair, par. and vil., Peeblesshire - par., 15,327 ac., pop. 754; vil., near confluence of Quair Water and river Tweed, 1½ mile S. of Innerleithen; in vicinity is Traquair House, seat, formerly the residence of the earls of Traquair (1633-1861).
