In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Keir like this:

Keir.-- par., W. Dumfriesshire, 7806 ac., pop. 745; contains Keir Mill, vil., on Scar Water, 2¾ miles SW. of Thornhill; P.O.; the Keir Hills are 1171 ft. high.
