In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Kemnay like this:
Kemnay, par. and vil. with ry. sta., Aberdeenshire - par., 5110 ac., pop. 1636; vil., on river Don, 4 miles W. of Kintore and 17¾ NW. of Aberdeen, pop. 432; P.O., T.O.; in N. vicinity of vil. are extensive granite quarries; in S. vicinity is Kemnay House, seat.
