In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Halkirk like this:
Halkirk, par. and vil. with ry. sta., Caithness-shire -- par., 95,763 ac., pop. 2705; vil., on river Thurso, 8J miles S. of Thurso and 15½ miles NW. of Wick, pop. 372; P.O., and P.O. at Halkirk Roadside. Caithness nag-stones are quarried.
