In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Golspie like this:
Golspie, coast par. and vil. with ry. sta., E. SutherLand -- par., 19,690 ac., pop. 1556; vil., on Golspie Burn, 17 miles SW. of Helmsdale and 84¼ NE. of Inverness, pop. 956; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks; Golspie is a sub-port, and has considerable trade; Golspie Burn flows 5 miles SE. along Dunrobin Glen to the sea.
