In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Slamannan like this:
Slamannan, par., quoad sacra par., and vil. with ry. sta., Stirlingshire - par., 70G2 ac.,pop. 5850; quoad sacra par., partly also in Falkirk par., pop. 6428; vil., near river Avon, 5½ miles SW. of Falkirk and 17½ NE. of Glasgow, pop. (including Blinkbonny) 1225; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank; extensive coal and ironstone mines are in the vicinity.
