In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Watten like this:
Watten, par. and ry. sta., Caithness - par., 30,579 ac., pop. 1406; P.O. at sta., 7½ miles NW. of Wick and at E. end of Loch Watten, which is 2½ miles long and ¾ mile broad.
