In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Arbirlot like this:
Arbirlot, coast par. and vil., Forfarshire, on Elliot water, 2½ miles W. of Arbroath, 6747 ac., pop. 822; P.O. Kelly Castle, built on a high rock, is in the vicinity.
