In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Newtyle like this:
Newtyle, par. and vil. with ry. sta., Forfarshire - par., 5192 ac., pop. 911; vil., 1½ mile SE. of Alyth Junction and 16½ miles (by road 11) NW. of Dundee, pop. 443; P.O., 1 Bank; has artificial manure works.
