In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Rhu like this:
Row, par. and vil., Dumbartonshire - par. (containing Helensburgh), 20,126 ac., pop. 10,097; vil., on E. side of Gare Loch, opposite Roseneath, and 2 miles NW. of Helensburgh, pop. (including 401 in Training Ship) 928; P.O., T.O. is beautifully situated, and has a small steamboat quay.
