In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Dunning like this:
Dunning, par. and vil. with ry. sta., on DunningBurn, in co. and 9½ miles SW. of Perth -- par., 14,855 ac., pop. 1635; vil., 1¾ mile SE. of sta., pop. (including Newton of Pitcairns), 1048; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank; the tower of the parish church is that of the Norman church of St Serf (13th century).
