In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Aboyne like this:
Aboyne and Glentanner, par., S. Aberdeenshire, on river Dee, 25,265 ac., pop. 1427; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. A., or Charleston of A., vil. with ry. sta., in the above par., is 10½ miles E. of Ballater. A. Castle, the seat of the Marquis of Huntly, is near the vil.
