In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Strath like this:
Strath, par., in SE. of Skye island, Inverness-shire, 71,411 ac., pop. 2616; comprises the islands of Scalpay, Pabbay, and Longay; the church is at Broadford.
