In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Linton like this:
Linton, par., in NE. of Roxburghshire, 6393 ac., pop. 543; the church is 6 miles SE. of Kelso; Linton Tower, a fortalice of the Somervilles, was demolished by the forces of Henry VIII.; Linton Loch has been drained.
