In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Assynt like this:
Assynt, extensive maritime par. and hamlet, SW. Sutherlandshire, 110,111 ac., pop. 2781; contains Loch Assynt, which is 5 miles long, and 215 ft. above the sea-level. The hamlet is also called Inchnadamff, and is 32 miles E. of Lairg ry. sta.; P.O.
