In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Eddleston like this:
Eddlestone (Eadulf's Town), par. and vil. with ry. sta. (Fddleston), Peebles-shire -- par., 18,490 ac., pop. 711; vil., on Eddlestone Water, 4½ miles N. of Peebles; P.O., called Eddleston; Eddlestone Water flows 9 miles S. to the Tweed at Peebles.
