In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Insch like this:
Insch, par. and vil. with ry. sta., Garioch dist., Aberdeenshire - par., 8370 ac., pop. 1536; vil., 13½ miles SE. of Huntly and 27½ NW. of Aberdeen, pop. 579; P.O., T.O.; 2 Banks; has monthly cattle fairs.
