In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Neilston like this:
Neilston, town and par., Renfrewshire, on river Levern, 2 miles SW. of Barrhead and 10 miles SW. of Glasgow by rail-par., 12,481 ac., pop. 11,359; town, pop. 2311; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank; there are numerous printfields, bleachfields, and cotton spinning mills in the district; Neilston Pad (854 ft.), 1½ mile S. of the town, commands a fine view.
