In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Udny like this:

Udny, par. and vil. with ry. sta., Aberdeenshire - par., 11,548 ac., pop. 1638; vil., 2¼ miles NW. of its sta., which is 14½ miles NW. of Aberdeen; P.O., 1 Bank; Udny Castle, seat of the Udny family, has an ancient tower.
