In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Eday like this:
Eday, island (7½ miles by 2½ miles), Stronsay and Eday par., Orkney, pop. 730; P.O.; has sheep-farming; sandstone of excellent quality is quarried and exported; Fersness Bay and Calf Sound are good natural harbs.
