In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Kilmacolm like this:
Kilmalcolm, par. and vil. with ry. sta., Renfrewshire, on Gryfe Water - par., 19,665 ac., pop. 2708; vil., 7¾ miles SE. of Greenock and 16½ W. of Glasgow, pop. 1170; P.O, T.O., 1 Bank; has a hydropathic establishlishment (1880).
