In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Lochlee like this:
Lochlee, par., in N. of Forfarshire, 58,382 ac., pop. 359; contains Tarfside; in the old churchyard is a monument to Alexander Ross (1699-1784), the poet, who was long schoolmaster of Lochlee.
