In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Alford like this:
Alford, par. and vil. with ry. sta., in mid of co. and 29½ miles NW. of Aberdeen, on river Don, 9102 ac., pop. 1472; vil., pop. 529; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. It has important grain and cattle markets.
