In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described New Abbey like this:
New Abbey*, par. and vil., Kirkcudbrightshire-par., 13,199 ac., pop. 906; vil., 7½ miles S. of Dumfries; P.O.; near the vil. is the fine ruin of a Cistercian abbey (Sweetheart Abbey) founded in 1275 by Devergoil.
