In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Gladsmuir like this:

Gladsmuir, par. and vil., in co. and 4 miles W. of Haddington, 7043 ac., pop. 1747; P.O.; 1½ mile SW. of vl. are the Gladsmuir Ironworks.
