In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Garvald like this:
Garvald.-- par. and vil., in co. and 5¾ miles SE. of Haddington, 13,442 ac., pop. 758; P.O.; on Garvald Farm is an ancient circular camp, 1500 ac. in circumference.
