In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Carmichael like this:
Carmichael, par. and hamlet, E. Lanarkshire, 3½ miles NW. of Thankerton ry. sta. and 5¼ miles SE. of Lanark; coal is worked, sandstone and limestone are quarried; 1 mile NE. of hamlet is Carmichael House, seat of the Carmichael-Anstruther family.
