In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Inverkip like this:
Inverkip (or Innerkip), coast par. and vil. with ry. sta., W. Renfrewshire - par. (containing town of Gourock), 12,549 ac., pop. 5359; vil., near the influx of the Kip to the Firth of Clyde, 6 m. SW. of Greenock, pop. 580; P.O., T.O.; Inverkip is a small watering-place.
