In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described High Peak like this:
HIGH PEAK, a hundred in Derbyshire; bounded by Cheshire, Yorkshire, Scarsdale, and Wirksworth; containing six parishes; and cut into the two divisions of High Peak and Bakewell. Acres of the H. P. div., 128, 371; of the B. div., 81, 146. Pop. in 1851, of the H. P. div., 41, 066; of the B. div., 00, 547. Pop., in 1861, of both, 66, 397. Houses, 13, 154.
