In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Tynedale like this:
TINDALE, or Tyndale, a ward in the S of Northumberland; named from the Tyne valley; and containing 30 parishes, and 3 parts. Acres, 514,660. Pop. in 1831, 42,414; in 1861, 48,723. Houses, 8,994.
