In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Saltcoats like this:

Saltcoats, seaport and watering-place with ry. sta., Ardrossan and Stevenston pars., Ayrshire, 1¼ mile SE. of Ardrossan and 29½ miles SW. of Glasgow by rail, pop. 5096; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks; has saltworks, but little or no shipping trade.
