In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Pilsley like this:
PILSLEY, a township, with a village, in Edensor parish, Derby; 2¼ miles N E of Bakewell. Acres, 447. Real property, £694. Pop., 320. Houses, 72. The village stands on an eminence, and commands beautiful and extensive views. A school-room is here, and is used as a chapel of ease.
