In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Thornton Hough like this:
THORNTON-HOUGH, or T. Mayow, a township-chapelry in Neston parish, Cheshire; 2 miles W by S of Bromborough r. station, and 2 NNE of Great Neston. Post town, Chester. Acres, 1,481. Real property, £2,763. Pop. in 1851, 164; in 1861, 349. Houses, 64. T. House is the seat of J. Hirst, Esq. There are several good residences of Liverpool merchants. The living is a p. curacy in the diocese of Chester. Value, £200.* Patron, J. Hirst, Esq. The church was built in 1868. There is a Wesleyan chapel.
