In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Walworth like this:
WALWORTH, a township in Heighington parish, Durham; 4½ miles NW of Darlington. Acres, 2,132. Real property, £2,511. Pop., 180. Houses, 27. W. Castle was built in the time of Elizabeth, and was visited, in 1603, by James I.
