In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Wharfedale like this:
WHARFE (The), a river of W. R. Yorkshire; rising on Cam Fell; and running about 60 miles south-east-ward, past Kettlewell, Threshfield, Ilkley, Otley, and Tadcaster, to the Ouse near Cawood. It gives the name of Wharfedale to its valley; and it abounds, in much of its run, with very fine scenery.
Wharfedale is now part of NORTH YORKSHIRE Unitary Authority. Click here for graphs and data of how NORTH YORKSHIRE has changed over two centuries. For statistics about Wharfedale itself, go to Statistics.
